Tucumcari city limits encompass 7.6 square miles within Quay County, New Mexico. The county itself contains 2,882 square miles. The land itself consists of dramatic mesas, rolling hills and broad grasslands. This vast landscape presents boundless opportunity for diverse industries.

 

Currently, agriculture and food processing compose the bulk of Tucumcari’s manufacturing sector. An extensive canal system irrigates 55,000 acres of farmland. The crops grown in Tucumcari are alfalfa, wheat, sorghum, and cotton.

 

Tucumcari is making strides in expanding eco-tourism in the area. Approximately a quarter-million tourists come to visit the area’s extensive natural resources each year. Nearby lakes, Ute & Conchas, provide water sports and abundant fishing.

 

Promising energy initiatives are underway in Tucumcari. Experts from gas companies have stated the region sits above a major gas deposit. The untapped potential is immense. Tucumcari Municipal Schools has state-of-the-art facilities. These include an innovative outdoor classroom with an amphitheater at Tucumcari Elementary. The high school has a professional-quality auditorium. Facilities like these show the system’s progressive, comprehensive approach to education. Tucumcari High School emphasizes a strong academic foundation. This ensures a seamless transition into higher education or the workforce.

 

Mesalands Community College culminates Tucumcari’s commitment to making education a lifelong process. The fully accredited 2-year institution is a flexible, accessible college. It offers associate degrees & certificate programs that enable students to expand their knowledge. The college aids in upgrading their skills to keep pace with the demands of today’s economy. Mesalands, in cooperation with the University of New Mexico, now offers bachelor’s degrees. These degree programs include Business Administration and Early Childhood Education.
