Altrusa International of Tucumcari, Inc., Tucumcari Fine Arts League, and the Quay County Health Council have joined together to host an 8-week painted rock scavenger hunt beginning April 1, 2022. These groups have been busy painting and preparing rocks for the event. Batches of rocks will be hidden each week in the parks and some other designated area in Tucumcari. “We are encouraging families to go for walks around our parks and look for the rocks” says Brenda Bishop, Quay County Health Council Coordinator. “This is a perfect time of year to get outside and be physically active.” One of the goals of the project is to increase physical activity. The other goal is to improve mental health and this project is meeting this goal on several levels. Those that are painting are using creativity to improve mental health and those that are hiding and seeking the rocks are getting outdoors and increasing physical activity which improves both physical and mental health. These groups have been busy painting and preparing rocks for the event. Batches of rocks will be hidden each week in the parks and some other designated area in Tucumcari.
When a rock is found, the finders are encouraged to post a picture on their social media with the tags #RockYourWalks and #healthrocks in the description. Each of these special rocks will have a yellow label on the back with instructions for turning them in to receive a coupon for a cookie provided by Subway Restaurants. We would like to thank the staff at the County Assessor’s Office for playing an important role. They will be receiving the rocks people find. The office is open from 7 am to 6 pm Monday – Thursday. It is located on the first floor of the Courthouse at 300 S Third St.
For each rock turned in with the yellow label intact, the finder will have a ticket added to the grand prize drawing bucket. Two grand prize gift cards will be drawn on the radio on June 7th. To add to the fun, special rocks will be hidden. These “Rock Stars” will also qualify for a gift card prize if turned in. Be sure to turn in rocks throughout the two months, because there will also be random prize gift cards given. To be eligible for a prize all rocks must be turned in to the Assessor’s Office by June 2, 2022.
Keep up with the challenge and what some of the hidden rocks look like on the Quay County Health Council and the Altrusa International of Tucumcari, Inc., Facebook and Instagram Pages. Follow the #Rockyourwalks tag or view the event. There may even be some clues to where some rocks are hidden. The more rocks turned in each week, the more we can hide the next week, giving more people chances to enjoy finding a fun painted rock.
